Managing OSH in the accommodation and food service sectors

Accommodation and food service activities are essential sectors for the economy of the EU, with 98% of these companies being family-run micro-enterprises.

Occupational safety and health (OSH) risks in the sector are abundant: from repetitive hand or arm movements, slips, trips and falls, and risks of accidents with machines to psychosocial risks associated with dealing with customers and tight deadlines. Regular risk assessments in this sector are carried out slightly below the EU average but the figures are very diverse among Member States.

EU-OSHA’s European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER) has delved into the issue and studied how European organisations manage safety and health risks at work in the accommodation and food service activities sector.

The report presents an in-depth analysis of the ESENER findings for the sector, as well as a literature survey and interviews with sectoral social partners. Based on these, it includes sector-specific measures to improve risk management in accommodation and food services, policy pointers, as well as an analysis of the impact of Covid-19.

Check out the report and summary Accommodation and food service activities - Evidence from ESENER and a flyer to learn more about the survey.

And our OiRA project has some 25 online risk assessment tools for the HORECA sector.
